As I am working with fine thin hair I try to keep a few rules of thumb at the front of my brain. Since most of these customers feel they are cursed with their hair, I love giving them styling, coloring, and cutting tips along with products that work for them.

To begin, let’s clarify texture and density.  The density of your hair is determined by the amount of hair per square inch.  The texture of your is the actual hair strand itself.  One can have thick hair (many strands per square inch) that is fine in texture (each strand is small in diameter).  On the other hand, one can also have coarse hair where each individual strand is thick.

Fine hair is very common.  The density is what differentiates. This type of hair has a flatter hair shaft whereas coarser hair tends to be thicker in diameter.

When cutting, I try to keep layering to a minimum.  By doing this, it allows more volume at the root while maintaining fullness at the ends.  And who doesn’t want their thin hair to look fuller?

Then when coloring, my goal is to keep a bit of depth (or a darker base) which gives the illusion of hair being thicker.  And for products, I always use a thermal protectant to minimize frizz and a bad blowout.  For lift and volume, I recommend “Volume” a foam through the scalp area.  Never use too much hairspray!  It can just go flat.
