What’s a reasonable amount of time to spend in a stylist’s chair? And, what’s a “reasonable” amount to pay for services? In 2021 salon costs are legitimately rising.
In the 90’s,2000’s, and early 2010’s you’d be able to be in and out of the salon within a couple of hours. But today it can take 4-5 hours to create a look like this. Why you ask? The hair industry has come a far way in a short amount of time, as fast as technology changes we are seeing new trends, techniques, products, and education.
For the past 30-40 years, the industry standard was that of the “old school” days…Vidal Sassoon only popularized using a hand-held blow dryer in the 70s, before that hair was set on curlers and put under a hooded dryer. Women used to come to the salon weekly to have their hair washed and set to last them the whole week.
Today we focus on the health of the hair while we are coloring, we don’t push things faster than they need to go. Our techniques, placement, and formulas are complicated and nuanced to each guest.
So if you’re looking to have the hair you see on IG and Pinterest, bring a snack and a good book because chances are you’ll be sitting for far longer than just a couple of hours.
- Botox typically costs $200-400 for a 30-minute appt and nobody blinks an eye.
- Lips? $600-$800. 30 min appt.
- Tattoos? $60-$1000
A hairstylist spends 2-5 hours on a guest’s hair and charges $300 and everyone loses their marbles.
Why though? It’s your HAIR. Do you know how much the products cost? The foils? The color? Back bar? Brushes? Then experience and time? And to top it off, chiropractors appointments because it breaks our back.
To all you hairstylists charging your worth, I support you, good job.

A Reasonable Amount of Time
- As stylists, we spend an extortionary amount of time on education.
- Because we care, we spend extra time
